The Scripted Apt.

An apartment where flow and function are shaped through light, sightlines, and materiality.

In this project, the brief was to open up the apartment and create better conditions for light. The goal was to make the home more dynamic, with distinct zones for reading, play, and togetherness. The owners wished to keep two bedrooms, while at the same time using the space more efficiently and creating a stronger spatial coherence.

Originally, the apartment consisted of adjacent yet separate rooms of similar size. Each had good proportions and natural light, but the flow between them was limited. The solution was to open up the plan and let the light move freely across the apartment.

The children’s room was reduced in size, and the reclaimed area was added to the living space, which now includes both a dining and tv zone – with the dining table as a natural gathering point for family and friends. Between the living room and the main bedroom, an opening was introduced to draw in light from multiple directions. The former entrance from the hallway to the bedroom was replaced by a custom-built solution: the wall was closed off with shelving towards the hallway, and a recessed window allows daylight to filter from the bedroom into the corridor.

The bathroom was completely renovated with bespoke solutions tailored to the dimensions of the space. Tiled walls, a birch plywood ceiling, and a microcement floor combine technical precision with a calm, tactile atmosphere. The aim was to meet modern standards while retaining the character of the room’s proportions and details.

Materiality played a key role throughout the process. The clients had clear preferences regarding surfaces and colours, and together we landed on birch plywood finished with a warm golden surface treatment from Osmo. As in several of our projects, transom light was used to draw in natural light and enhance the spatial experience. Through a careful play of sightlines and layers, the apartment now feels open, coherent, and alive, a place that invites use, and where everyday life can flow naturally.
